Ceramics

I have been fascinated by clay and the mesmeric quality of the potter's wheel most of my life. I finally took a pottery class at the Folk House about 10+ years ago and fell in love with it. Despite the difficulty of learning to throw, including using a right handed wheel when I am very left handed, I couldn't let it go. This resulted in many, many wonky pots. However slowly, slowly I made progress.

During the pandemic, I found myself thinking more and more about the clay, so after spending most of my working life in the performing arts, I decided to see what the world of ceramics had to offer.

I now have a tiny pottery studio in my former potting shed. I have learned (and continue to learn) the skills that potters need. I'm fascinated by how different types of clay feel in the hand as a maker, and drinker of tea. I love both freestyle throwing when I let the clay decide the shape, and the discipline of designing a mug or piece of jewellery and seeing it to completion. I continue to discover different ways of decorating and adding colour from printing with slip (coloured clay) to the effects that can be achieved with glazes.  I want the pots and jewellery that I make to spark a smile or little moment of joy in the day.
