I have been fascinated by ceramics and specifically the pottery wheel most of my life. After a career as a theatre producer, I am now delighted that I get to work with clay every day. There is always something new to learn about this ancient craft. While technology has made some aspects less tricky, the basic principles are the same as they were a thousand years ago. A thumb print on an ancient piece of pottery connects us across time and cultures. In my work I like to show a little of the process in the finished piece: the swirl of clay as I create a pot on the wheel or a thumb mark that shows how I have glazed a mug or bowl: a little trace of the human in the clay.
